The English Bulldog - a Popular Family Pet

Gary Ferone oversees Fairfield Family Care, a leading home care company located in Stamford, Connecticut. In his free time, Gary Ferone engages in a range of outdoor pursuits including snowboarding, flying planes, and mountain biking. He also enjoys caring for his family dog, an English bulldog rescue.

First bred in the British Isles, the English bulldog was originally used to drive cattle to market. The role of the dogs eventually changed to that of a companion animal, and the breed soon found its way to countries outside of Great Britain.

Loyal, loving, easy to train, and good with children and other dogs, bulldogs make great family pets. Bulldogs are also low-energy and do not beg for walks. Another advantage is that bulldogs require only minimal grooming. However, with a flat face, a narrow upper airway, and a heavy build, bulldogs are sensitive to temperature and must be kept indoors most of the time, especially in hot weather.

In recent years, bulldogs have grown in popularity as household pets. According to the American Kennel Club's most recent rankings, the bulldog is now the fourth most popular dog breed in the United States.
